Summer School Timeline

  • January- April 2022

    January 2022

    An idea for a collaboration between the Social Work Department at University of Hamburg for Applied Sciences and the School of Applied Humanities and Languages at the German Jordanian University took root in January 2022. The first meeting included 3 people from the GJU and 2 from HAW.
    In this meeting, the initial ideas and structure of the summer school was laid out and agreed on, and ideas on who more to invite to include in the next meeting of the project were exchanged.

    2nd meeting in Mid-March 2022:
    The 2nd meeting had more of the people who would make the final team of the summer school and still there was talk of the need of the expertise of more people. groups were formed and each of the tree workshop teams began working on their Workshop schedules.

  • April- September 2022

    Between April and September, the group finalised the different workshop schedules, and a final proposal was orchestrated around them to submit for the DAAD Sommerschulen im Ausland funding.

  • September – December 2022

    The period between September and December was spend with everyone going about their days, trying very hard not to think about the submitted proposal, yet hoping for a positive decision.

    On the 2nd of December 2022 – We received a positive decision regarding our proposal. We had DAAD support and funding!

  • January- February 2023

    In January of 2023 preparations for the summer school events commenced!

    Flyers were designed and announced to engage some of our incredible community of students and experts in Jordan. The response surpassed our wildest dreams and expectations! We received interest from more than 111 people in participating in our 3 workshops.

    Meanwhile, our team members in Hamburg were preparing to journey to Amman, and those in Jordan were preparing to receive both those coming from Germany and those joining us on our project.

    On the 27th of February, the Hamburg Team joined us in Jordan.

    On the 28th of February 2023, we all met in person, some of us for the first time, for the official Launch of the Summer School Project: Resilience in Times of Crisis – Transnational Approaches to Social Work at the GJU’s Campus in Na’our.

  • March 2023

    Right at the beginning of March and with the first glimpses of Spring in Jordan, our main events of the summer school project began:

    1st and 2nd March- Storytelling and Philosophizing with Children Workshop

    2nd and 3rd of March- Humanitarian Social Management in Times of Crisis Workshop

    6th and 7th March – Research on Resilience Workshop

  • May 2023

    In May, 2 follow-up events of the summer school took place to further expand the participant list and objectives of the project. These included:

    1- A hybrid Q&A session between GJU students and HAW students about studying in Hamburg and Jordan.

    2- A story telling event at The Ummama Bint Abi Alass Primary school as a follow-up to the Storytelling and Philosophizing with Children Workshop. This time, Bachelor’s students from the School of Applied Humanities and Languages at the GJU visited the same children for another storytelling morning: https://www.gju.edu.jo/news/storytelling-event-ummama-bint-abi-alass-primary-school-16670

  • April- June 2023

    The team started working on a platform that would connect participants of the summer school with academics, students, practitioners, and scholars who are interested in the Resilience in Times of Crisis topic.
